Common Errors — Frequent mistakes Indian learners make.

Rules

1. Use a/an with singular countable nouns — a book, an apple. 2. No article before plural generics: Books are useful (not "The books are useful" in general sense). 3. No article before uncountable generics: Water is life. 4. "The" before unique things, superlatives and already-mentioned nouns. 5. No article with most proper nouns: I live in India (but the Himalayas, the United States). 6. Professions need a/an: She is a doctor (not "She is doctor"). 7. Musical instruments take "the": play the guitar. 8. Meals usually no article: have breakfast (but "a nice breakfast").

Explanation

Indian-English classics: "She is doctor", "I am going to school" (no article, correct for routine) vs "the school" (the building).
