Helping Verbs

Verbs elementary easy

Helpers (be, have, do, will, can…) build tenses, questions and negatives.

Verbs — Verb forms, modals and non-finite verbs.

Rules

1. Helpers (be, have, do, will, would, can, could, may, might, shall, should, must) build tenses, questions and negatives. 2. "Be" + -ing → continuous; "be" + past participle → passive. 3. "Have" + past participle → perfect. 4. "Do" forms questions and negatives in present/past simple. 5. Modals add ability, permission, obligation.

Explanation

"He is writing" — "is" is the helping verb. "Have you eaten?" — "have" is the helper. Helpers never carry the full meaning alone.
