A phrase is a group of words without a subject-verb unit.

Rules

1. Noun phrase: the tall man. 2. Verb phrase: has been waiting. 3. Adjective phrase: full of courage. 4. Adverb phrase: as fast as possible. 5. Prepositional phrase: in the morning. 6. A phrase cannot stand alone as a complete sentence.

Explanation

A phrase has no finite verb and no subject-verb combination. "In the morning" is a phrase; "when I woke up" is a clause.
