Conjunctions

Foundation beginner easy

Conjunctions join words, phrases and clauses.

Foundation — The building blocks of English grammar.

Rules

1. Coordinating (FANBOYS): for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so — join equal parts. 2. Subordinating: because, although, while, if, when, since, unless, until — join a dependent clause to a main clause. 3. Correlative: either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also, both...and. 4. No comma before a subordinating conjunction at the start of a sentence's second half unless needed for meaning.

Explanation

Use "but" for contrast, "so" for result, "because" for reason. Correlative pairs must be kept parallel: "neither...nor" not "neither...or".
