Participial Clauses

Advanced Grammar advanced hard

Clauses built from participles (-ing / -ed) that compress information.

Advanced Grammar — Voice, narration, clauses and conditionals.

Rules

1. Present participle: Walking home, I met a friend (= When I was walking home...). 2. Past participle: Surprised by the news, she cried (= Because she was surprised...). 3. Perfect participle: Having finished work, he left. 4. The implied subject must match the main clause subject — otherwise it dangles: Walking home, the rain started (wrong). 5. Participial clauses make writing compact and formal.

Explanation

Participial clauses are common in formal writing. Always keep the implied subject identical to the main clause subject to avoid a dangling modifier.
