Tenses intermediate medium
Actions in progress at a point in the past.
Tenses — Expressing time: present, past and future.
1. Form: was/were + verb-ing — She was reading. 2. Use for background action interrupted by past simple: I was sleeping when the phone rang. 3. Use for two parallel actions: While I was cooking, he was watching TV. 4. Signal words: while, when, at 8 o'clock yesterday.
Past continuous sets the scene; past simple reports the event that interrupts. "While" usually goes with the continuous clause.
