Tenses intermediate medium
The earlier of two past actions.
Tenses — Expressing time: present, past and future.
1. Form: had + past participle — She had finished. 2. Use for the action that happened first: The train had left before we reached the station. 3. Signal words: before, after, when, by the time, already. 4. Not needed when order is clear from before/after alone, but standard in narration.
Past perfect marks the earlier event in a two-past situation. If the order is obvious, past simple is acceptable: "We reached after the train left" (informal) vs "The train had left before we reached" (formal).
