1. Who: person (subject) — Who called you? 2. Whom: person (object) — Whom did you see? (formal) 3. What: thing — What is this? 4. When: time — When did he leave? 5. Where: place — Where are you going? 6. Why: reason — Why are you sad? 7. How: manner — How did you do it? 8. How much/many: quantity; How often: frequency; How long: duration; How far: distance. 9. Structure: Wh-word + auxiliary + subject + main verb — Where does she live?
Choose the wh-word by what you are asking about. "Who" acts as subject (no auxiliary), "whom" as object.
